The Post Rehabilitation Stage: Home Sweet Home
It is common for severe burn victims to continue treatment long after the rehabilitation process. Treatments will provide the boost they may need to continue on with the physical and social aspects of everyday life. Some burn patients may require further treatment after the rehabilitation process. Below are some common practices of continued therapy:
Massage therapy- Serving dually as a psychological and physical treatment, massage therapy reduces the pain, itching and stress of a burn injury.
Music relaxation-This therapeutic method can help your loved one cope with the memory of traumatic experience. It is an effective way to reduce stress and anxiety that many burn victims experience.
Virtual reality- This young concept may seem like a quirky remedy, but it has proven to be effective. It allows burn victims to interact in a virtual world set in snow and ice, a setting that is completely different from the burn accident. This serves as a distraction from the memory of the experience and, in effect, eases the pain.
It is evident the burn victim will have to face obstacles before returning to everyday activities. However, the future of most burn victims is optimistic. According to the UMCSC Department of Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine, 79.7 % of burn patients return to work within the first year of a major burn injury. The rehabilitation process may be difficult to get through but it is well worth it in the end.
