A catastrophic injury can dramatically change someone’s life in a matter of seconds. Often times, the first few days in the hospital can be the worst not only for the injury survivors, but for the family and friends who love them as well. Only those who have been there can understand the overwhelming feeling a caregiver has when a loved one is being treated for a life altering injury. Thus, the Injury Co-Op created The Co-Op Cares Program to provide completely free aid to families of catastrophic injury survivors in Central Florida who are keeping vigil in hospital waiting rooms.
The Co-Op Cares Program has made it a priority to provide a few items that will make you feel as comfortable as possible throughout your hospital experience. Each backpack includes:
• A soft fleece blanket for those cold waiting rooms
• A stress ball
• A Guestbook for visitors to sign and leave words of encouragement
• A Recovery Handbook
• Pen and Paper Pad
Each backpack also includes a Recovery Handbook. This is perhaps the most useful tool the Co-Op Cares Program offers as it is designed to provide organization. The handbook enables families to be proactive about a loved one’s recovery and provides emotional support for the caregiver along the journey. Each Recovery Handbook allows families or caregivers to:
• Store necessary contact information in one place
• Organize medical, financial and legal documents for ease and accessibility
• Provide key information on ways to advocate for their loved one
• Document their loved one’s recovery progress
• Have a constructive emotional outlet
The Injury Co-Op is here for you 24/7. We operate an around the clock toll free line for families who need additional resources, support or just someone to talk to. Each call is answered by someone who has true compassion and empathy for the situation because they too are a survivor or caregiver.
